I believe Linc is getting some to use for the Aus Safari. I think a few importers have looked at bringing them in but it ends up pretty expensive per quad (like around $1k) so most people have thought them uneconomical to bring in here.

Dont know anything aout retail pricing but havent seen them anywhere except on a specification for a US Quad bikes to be used by their special forces.

Not seen an ad for them in Dirt Bike since that article year and a half ago. Had assumed they werent available or werent being sold (same thing?)

I would have thought if they kept a tyre fully operational that the race teams would be all over them even at that cost. I guess the issue here is they dont let you "race on" they just let you keep moving.

Now I wonder if you took that concept (i believe they had about 10 balls) and converted into 100's of ping pong size balls, I think you may end up with a product you could potentially race on as you would only loose say 2 or 3 to the puncture potentially out of hundreds.

I guess the issue is in getting them in but even in writing this Ive had a a couple of idea's so surely some handy guys is all it would take and a day of work to figure out how to load these things in under enough preassure to race on.

Then it just becomes a cost factor of does producing one big ball equal the cost of one little ball or can you get 50 little balls for the price of 1 big ball?? Well I may be able to answer that myself if a squash ball is actually equal to about 4-6psi.

Just an interesting hypothetical. Maybe we should try it out on you Cowchaser? You're the one doing the Safari.

It has been tried with various different ways Geeman, the problem is the tire ball way seems to be the most effective method.

I've tried it with a few other concepts (tennis balls etc) with out much success, the tire balls are made into the right shape already and are easier to load than anything that is your tradition spherical shape. Squash balls would be a pain in the arse cos you would need hundreds to do a whole set of tyres and also the weight of them would outweigh the benefit of have puncture proof tyres.

this is also one of the reasons why no one makes bib mousse tube inserts for ATV's they would be too heavy and also very challenging to fit to an ATV tyre.

Ignoring the weight of the squash balls for a second the mental solution I came up with was a netting bag, appropriately size to be under preassure of 4-6 PSI when installed.

So Maybe no good for restricted class racing but any open class racing might be a winner?

Good thing about some extra weight in tyres on unrestricted class would be lower CoG. Is there open class races to try it on? Had heard from Y-sub the only unrestricted racing was going to be dominated by roadbike in-line four hybrids. Maybe he was just talking drags. Dunno.

How about styrofoam balls would they rebound to their original shape? Not with convential styrofoam but there may be a product out there.

Must be some point at which it becomes viable by finding the most efficient material (weight/cost/installation) Vs outcome, ability to race not idle home.

Just thinking out loud......

dual bead lock wheels and few concrete pills (to harden the f*** up) and you can still race home (hey smitty)

tire balls would seem to be the most effective so far and also the most durable in an air filled product, there are various foam rubber that would be up to the job but only as a short term solution which would not end up being cost or time effective as the foam tends to degrade under the conditions, even bib mousse tubes for dirt bikes don't last more than a couple of big events.

the most cost effective flat tyre prevention is still to run an instant puncture repair liqiud like "slime" and that way unless you have a total tyre faliure (like a massive gash in the side wall) you'll still keep riding.

ATM the tire balls run at around $199 USD per wheel direct from the manufacturer so add some shipping and dollar coversion and your easily looking at $1k + AUD to get a set here.

LB tried that for Finke didn't he.....

the only problem there is they don't last long cos the noodle degrades with the heat of the tyre. Having said that I may still try it in the rear wheels on the Typhoon....

the heavier the foam the more heat it will retain....

I've tried oversized tennis balls, deflated then reinflated with the tyre half on the rim al la tire balls mounting style. problem was I couldn't get them inflated as much as I wanted and still be able to seat the tyre on the rim properly.

have a look at how they actually mount the tireballs in the tyre on their instructional videos, it give a pretty good idea of what your up against.
