 |
|
In a vain attempt to appear cool in front of the younger guys I ride with, I have been spending a great deal of time lately trying to perfect a decent wheelie. I have now come to the realisation that I am utterly crap at it. Can anybody please offer me some tips on how it is done correctly. I can get it up pretty easily but can't keep it up (please don't take this as an opportunity to offer any Nasal Delivery Technology or Viagra advice). Any help would be appreciated. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

oh no you didnt put dont take the piss out of the type of bike you ride either
i have found that i can pop wheelies on my 700 what i do is strech right back while on the seat give it a squirt till you get to the point were you feel your going to tip then play with the back brakes a little to find the right spot .. you will flip a few times trying but you do get the feel of it after a few shots..and then its cool poping long wheelies..i just can not do the gear change bit yet _________________ Sponsors ,Cullys Yamaha,Pirtek Malaga

best place to perfect it is sand, wont hurt the bike when you stack....
Took me a while but in the end i had em sorted, at stockton, after a race i just about could wheelie the whole way back on the LTR.... great fun,
But as has been said, put your ass as far back as you can and just pop it up in 2nd or 3rd (whatever speed your comfortable with) and find the balance point, dont be to jerky, and with the torqu of the 700 you will be able to control it well using the engine to brake.
Good luck champ, and try and find a sandy spot |

it might sound silly but get a push bike, best way to perfect your balance, bonus is you get a cardio workout at the same time. _________________ 10 LTR 555 Dingo

I'm trying to teach myself the slow first gear wheelie after watching some you tube vids of quad stunters climbing all over the thing while doing wheelies along the road.
I find its easier to get the feel for the balance point on my LTR with my left knee on the seat and my foot on the grab bar, I know its cheating but its a lot easier to pop it up doing it like that and maintaining a slow crawl. When I sit I'm not letting it get back far enough to balance so I have to compensate with revs... just gotta get my head around it I reckon and practice more _________________ Proud Member of QuadridersSA

i used to put 1 foot in the rear grab bar an one foot on the peg this way if i went to far i could just step off. It will take a while to get there but you finally get it the banshee was really hard at 1st but i got it in the end i did mine mostly on beach so it didn t hurt _________________ www.atvwa.com

All good advice so far, it seems like I am on the right track and just need to get past the fear of pulling the bike over.
Much more constructive than Mrs Fossil's advice "stop trying to show off and just keep it on four wheels you idiot!! and don't think you're having any time off if it lands on top of you".

Most of my wheelies on the 700 are just pure throttle, I am not one for long ones but always seem to get it up after most corners on the track..
I tried the ol foot in the grab bar trick to start with too.... _________________ Andrew |

hey there
everyone has there own way to wheelieyoull just have to find yours you some people use clutch to pop up and brakes to go back down but lets be honest your goin past balance point the last thing sumone learning to wheelies gunna do is tap the brake if there bout to come off the back.
find which gear out of first or second seems it wants to lift out of easier than just roll round keeping the revs up popping it up
once its up dont hold the throttle on though let it out a bit and ease it back on enough to keep the front up but not waste the whole gear too quick
i chop the throttle in first to get it up( as well as sliding ur arse to the very back of the seat) then once its up just relax with the throttle and gently push it in slowly to keep moving and let it out if your goin to far back and let the compression of the bike in gear keep you rolling
have make it sound complicated but just practice getting it up there and once its up this will make sense keeping it up
hope this helps instead of confusing
later goodluck |

Actually the last guy just reminded me of a "real" tip that will probably help.
I would recommend first gear and as slow as possible.
Staying in first or second (not 3rd or 4th) will help you save the free ambulance ride for another day.
You only need a small space and it's easier to find a short perfectly flat patch of ground somewhere (like your drive way).
Less obsticles means better concentration.
but the bigtip...
If you are someone that always falls off the back, turn your idle down.
If you are someone who keeps dropping the front, turn your idle right up.
I reckon youl be surprised how this can help maintain balance point.
Most people back off too much when they freak about going over.
The full thhrottle chop engine breaking drops the front straight to the deck.
turning the idle up will make the chop less violent and more controlable.
The one foot in the grab bar is a good tip too.
You should only end up standing behind it if you get it too far wrong.
best luck, and make sume mum turns the video camera on... this stuff can win you $5,000 on funniest home videos. _________________ Can-Am X Team

This is exactly my problem. I can get the front up easily by giving the throttle a squirt in second, but usually crap myself before I've gone more than a few feet and back right off. A lack of confidence is the issue here more than anything else I think. I will give all these suggestions a go on the weekend and maybe post a pic if I have some success. Thanks. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

Like cowchaser said,
not being afraid of the balance point is the key.
Gaining experiance of exactly where that point is with the least amount of pain is the difficulty.
A good safe way that might help...
If you have a few mates around, turn the quad off and get them to pick the front up by grabbing a wheel each.
It will be light and easy for them to hold up at ballance point.
Now here your bit...
Slowly get on the quad and hold the rear brake on.
With a bit of mucking around one of you mates should be able to hold you at ballance point with one finger.
Thats it. _________________ Can-Am X Team

Another good way of finding the ballance point is the slow first gear wheelie. Start poping it up at a slow walking pace and if you over ballance you should just fall on your ass and not damage the quad. I othen do this when i'm training for MX and am sick of doing laps. I start doing slow first gear wheelies and ride on the side two wheels doing figures of 8, it's proberly the best clutch and throttle control practise you can get _________________ Smitty |

Yes I can just see Toni Pearon announcing this seasons video finalist. "Hi Ho Silver" A trusting and ruggedly handsome ATV rider mounts his machine, front held high by his loyal riding companions. Cue the theme music from "The Lone Ranger", as the front of the quad is hoisted ever skyward until, doubling over with laughter, the riding companions push the machine over backwards. Close up of said ruggedly handsome ATV rider flailing about, upturned turtle like, under the weight of his trusty ride. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |

I thought that gastly negative as I typed the suggestion Fossil.
I thought, nar, I'll suggest it anyway because maybe he has good mates that would look after him.
But NO.
Seems your mates are a lot like mine.
Better cancel that last suggestion. _________________ Can-Am X Team

No progress at this stage but am out on the missus's raptor at the block this weekend with Yogie so stay tuned for an update if any wheelie based mishaps occur. _________________ I'm not suffering from insanity, I'm enjoying it!!! |
