Can anyone tell me how to remove the steering stem bearing in a YFZ 450. Its the one in the frame at the bottom of the steering stem. I forgot to remove it when i had the frame powder coated and of course its pretty seezed up now.
Any retailers out there, can u give me a guesstimate on replacment cost also. Need the rubber caps on it too.

get a big bolt with the same head size as the one in the chasis and put 2 nuts on the end of the boltit and lock them together, then undo the bottom nut and it will undo the chasis nut !!

Try the bearing shops for your bearing and seals. You can save a bit by going to them instead of Yamaha.
We just changad all the bearings on our banshee & only had to get 1 or 2 seals through Yamaha.
If your nut won't budge, try giving it a sharp hit with a hammer. Put a dolly behind it when you do this. That might help crack the corrosion, which is more than likely what is holding it. It will crack the paint as well.

Cheers for the tips guys. Will give it a whirl this week. Yeah funny that with the cost of bearings etc. The Yamaha guy in Darwin told me, NO u cant use anything else other than Yamaha stuff cause it is different to a standard bearing. He couldnt tell me exactly what was different but it just was. My local Honda guy in Katherine said he wouldnt sell me a Yamaha one as it would be much cheaper for me to go across the road to the car spare parts guy and get it from him as it is a common bearing.
Not the first incompetent run in Ive had with Darwin Yamaha though. |

bearing shop will be easier, probably only $15 for bearing and seal. I only buy genuine bearings if absolutely nessesary, like if I don't have one to match to or know the part number already. I've made a tool for that nut you're trying to get off, we cut out a hex of steel and welded it to an old 1/2 inch extention bar (a short one). then you can use a breaker bar to crack it and a ratchet to run it out.

With the banshee, I bought a nut that fit in where a workshop might have put a fancy tool. It stuck out far enough for me to get an 18 inch shifter on to it. We had already 2 packed the frame & it was bare. To get it out we had to put a pipe on the shifter & my 2 sons had to hold the frame. We weren't sure we were doing it right at first. It did move though.

| thanks for the tips guys. The bolt and nuts worked a treat. Of course the only socket/spanner I didn't have was a 30mm. A pipe wrench that is older than my dad did the trick. That was the last part of the tear down. Now just have to find a bolt replacement kit then to start the build up. The only one I can find is on ebay form the USA. |
