Hello,
Looking for anyones experience; just installed a K + N filter with outer-wear cover on Yam '06 YFZ450. (Still stock pipe with no baffel).

Took out standard 155 main jet and put in 158 main jet. Seemed to idle and rev fine with air box lid on. But havn't had the chance to go for a ride...

Anyone agree or disagree with this jetting? Should I have even bothered?

Cheers for any feedback.
ash

Is it just a K&N filter or a pro flow adapter as well?. even with the lid on I'd still prob go up to a 162

the proflow goes into the airbox inplace of the stock filter mount and mesh screen. Its a billet ring that you need to rivet into place

sounds like you just have a replacement filter

your 158 main sounds good. im running a 158 with lid off, slip on muffler and uni filter replacement filter

if you plan on taking the lid off, i would recommend getting the YZF needle, it helps in the other areas that need adjusting

cheers for the detailed responce. But yeah I got the oring sealed billet ring with the k&n filter. about $270 for the kit.
Popped the rivets on the old manifold/adapter and screwed the new sucker in.

So with air box lid on, 158 still good. Or should go bigger. Hate to run lean...
I have to travel a fair way to do any kind of riding and I am not confident doin my own plug chop anyway, nor do I relish the idea of changing jets in the bush. I'm still new to this whole spanner and rench thing. Razz

cheers,
ash

in that case Ash I'd go up another size or 2 on your main and take the lid off.
but it depends on what kind of riding yopur doing mostly.

If you've got an outerwares on the K&N then you shouldn't need to worry about big stuff getting onto the filter.

Plug chops aren't much chop (haha get it) with premium unleaded fuel these days unless there is a major problem with your jetting(i.e. air leak or badly block air filter) the best indicator is your exhaust port or failing that ypur muffler should be a nice tan/grey colour like what you'd look for on a plug but a bit darker.

I'd be more inclined to go with a JD needle if your looking to clean it up a bit more. smoother delivery than the YZ needle IMHO

Pete thats some good information thanks.

I have a 04 450 with the following mods
ESR Pro pipe full system, Cam timing changed, Prodesign pro flow filter, Lid off' YZ needle 4th clip i think, 172 main, 45 pilot (i think), All general riding, cross country etc NO MX

And i have always felt that i was running to rich (exhaust is very black) but never really been able to work out what to do, because the bike runs hards and never plays (up except for the infamous hesitation of idle). i have tried the plug chops but felt that they were never really accurate. so i felt if it runs OK leave it alone.

However i would be interested to know your thoughts on where i should be.

Thanks
Ian

I have the outerwares on. So I'll take of the airbox lid and go up to 162main jet. That is 3 sizes up from stock standard 155 main.

The exhast port (the hole coming out the front of engine where exhaust pipe starts), is pretty black. That is from stock set up only. No previous mods. I'll give it a wipe and see if it is a lighter shade after running around with 162 mains.

Well I havn't had a chance to ride it to see if it is still pulling smooth. I guess I wont worry about the needle jet for now?? Espeacially since I don't have a JD needle - where can I get from, website? Is it really necassary for my set up?

Cheers,
ash

ps: thanks for help. When I talk to a few yammy dealers in Syd, they don't know crap and hardimans who sold me the filter were of very little help too which I think is a bit odd Neutral

172 MJ is prob a bit rich for your setup Ian but the Needle is probably more important for the kind of riding your doing. XC riding you generally arent getting all the way onto the main jet all the time so your needle pos may be too high and causing it to be a little rich. An easily adjustable fuel screw will help with the hesitation off idle.

Ash, you dont need a JD needle but I highly recommend them. you can get them from Me or from Keg on DBW. www.jdjetting.com is worth a look if your interested.
