It is illeagal for a child under 16 to ride a fullsized quad in a work place here(ie a farm) I would be happier if that covered all users. The current law basically says that kids cant ride anything higher than 50cc unless manufacturors guidelines say otherwise ie a 12 year old is ok on a 125 raptor etc

We've 7 different states and territories that sort of say the same thing, and they take their lead from the the national bodies.
And yes, our manufacturers state the same thing.
Motorsport has MA, with a very sound arrangement.

The grey area between farm and home causes some issues.
The media, the academics and the stupid/didn't know crowd do the rest.
Oh, and then there is the odd accident that just happens.
It's a very messy situation.

This particular call came from the legend in his own lunchbox himself, Professor Tony Lower.
He, like our Federal Minister, Bill Shorten, would rather modify all machines than make laws to encourage a change in attitude.

more stupidity.... why cant they just accept that banning "profanity removed" doesnt work... there are still trikes out there right, if you stop the sale of junior quads commercially it wont stop there being a shitload of 2nd hand ones or people bringing in grey import 2nd hand ones to sell... as for legislating for safety ie. ROPS there will still be a way for the end users to put themselves in unsafe situations with them and die just as easily from not being strapped into them as do now from not wearing helmets....

do they think a 16 yr old thats never rode a quad in his life,
He then gets one for his birthday, covers it with drunk mates and then crashes is gonna kill less people then teaching kids on small bikes from a early age how to rde them properly.

the issue is farmers have been in tracters there whole life, and dont grasp the fact that a quad doing 60 kph off camber across a hill is not a smart idea,
thats a skill you learn at a early age what works and what dosent.
or by being a smarter farmer and not thinking shite the sheep are escaping lets stop em and then going flat out, while watching the sheep and not where there going.

I dont want to be hung and whipped.....

My expernience only

a few months back my partner and I rode the hills of Adelaide River... she rides a X2 touring Polaris .... long story short about why this accident happened but being a 2 seater the 2nd seat sticks in the air probaly 400mm above the main quad. She wears all the saftey gear .... everything. the quad rolled backwards to the left sideways down the hill.

I cant help, but to think if....... and I know because I have gopro footage that second seat saved her life ..... it gave her space as the quad went over the top and not crushing her in the rocks. Very Very lucky.... So roll bars may be a lot of bad things But if it keeps the quad from crushing U on the innitial roll .... they could save lives.

Helmets should be manatory.... Irresponsible dealers who sell quads and dont sell helmets should have their licence taken away .... Hats off to Polaris and CF MOTO...

I am still against roll bars on quads BUT certain applications they could save lives...

Huskygoat brings up a valid point^^^^^^^.
CanAm, Polaris, CF Moto and TGB are 4 brands that I can think of, that provide a two up design with integral seat backs for the pillion, which may be enough in a slow roll scenario.
It's not a metre higher, but it appears to be better mounted than the device in question. My own experience is that it does stop the bike going over in a slow roll, and didn't destroy the bike or itself in the process.

Casual observation though, just about every rider I've ever met has two eyes, and a brain, the use of which is optional. And air bags might save lives in cars, but I've no intention of testing the theory. I enjoy riding, crashing is not on the agenda. I try to ride to the conditions and my own capability. And by the conditions, I'll make my passenger walk if it looks possible that an unintentional offload could occur.

If people have a belief or genuine need for the percieved "protection" an ACD provides, by all means get one.
Or choose another path or vehicle to do it in.

they could give up on the roll bar stupid idea. and mount a
airbag on the back rack.
As soon as the bike goes past 60' it deploys.
Giving the rider crush protection.
Also wouldnt add to the high centre of gravity like a big steel frame

If your bike goes past 60 - 70 degrees theres no coming back from that.
Give me 5 percent royalty for the idea for ever. and start making them.

Quad bike curse? I must be cursed. Real Bad.
And that means the Quad Bike Muster, Thumb Pump, The Great Divide and every other get together will be a pagan ritual.........

lol thats funny.

but seriouly i have hit plenty of roos with my triton and not one air bag has deployed, even at 100 kph hitting 2 at once still no black eyes...
so with a properly installed angle switch or similar device the risk of premature deployment would not be a issue.

road bikes have a vehicle tip senor so something simililar to that would work.

very easy to retrofit as its smaller then a lunch box, and wouldnt require chasis mods like a rops would

Like your thinking Dangerman.
Some convertable cars have a pop up roll bar activated by sensors, too.
In any case, the dogs gone.

Col 51, this campaign is all emotional, common sense has nothing to do with it.
It is a railroad job, through and through.
Dave Robertson is set to make a lot of money with the, I now call it, Placebo Bar.*
Bill Shorten can say he made a splash on his way out the door.
A certain Professor and a certain agricultural engineer will be proud of what they put forward through dodgey and ill informing figures.
The governments will keep training/licensing as a user based option in most cases.

A lack of common sense will ensure that the product will be mis used and faith in the ACD to make people death and injury proof will prove otherwise.
People will still do dumb things, and misfortune will still carry on as normal.

*
From this source:
http://www.skepdic.com/placebo.html
"The placebo effect is the measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health or behavior not attributable to a medication or invasive treatment that has been administered."

Well put Dino , I do fully agree with rider training the same as with advanced driver training , I think this is more the answer . If you buy a Quad or Car should be part of the Lisencing , perhaps this is to much like common sense

well said Col, but the bottom line its up to us as parents to educate our kids as best as possible so , this tragedy never occurs. because in the end we have gotten our kids riding quads.

For those that don't know the situation about this family.....

From the reports I've read and seen, young Sam and his family did the tree change thing and moved to the country.
He went up the road this morning to help his mate's family move some cattle or some such.
Sam ended up on a Grizzly, of about 500cc, without his parents knowledge or permission.
He came off the bike, without any ppe and at some speed.
The first his parents knew about it was when the coppers came to their door to break the sad news.

His parents are quite determined to see laws changed so that helmets are compulsory and create awareness.
Quite as per normal, the politicians, media and some zealous "experts" are now riding this to suit there own purposes, as well as the "jump on a bandwagon" crowd.

So now it sucks all round.
