Hi guys Im looking at changing the gearing on my 2007 trx450er, i want it to have a bit longer legs as i do alot of wound out trail riding amd the stock setup is too low geared. My gearing on it now is just the stock 13 and 38. Is it a better idea to go up in the front sprocket or go down in the rear sprocket? Will a 14 tooth front sprocket fit on my bike or will it be rubbing on cases and chain guards etc etc? is it a better option to get a smaller rear sprocket? Any opinions would be great. Thanks.

Matt I have an 04 model. I have a 13 on it for hills & tighter stuff. When I go out to a particular spot which has very fast open free flowing trails I put a 15 on, I've never touched the rear sprocket as the change on the front does the job & no it wont rub because the sprocket with more teeth doesnt get bigger, there are just more of them. lastly if your on a tight budget the front change over is a cheap but effective option for a piddlie $15 a pop

a 15 tooth sprocket IS BIGGER then a 13........
how can there be more teeth with the same size?
it would change the teeth spacing where it meshes with the chain?
about 5mm bigger. |

yeah i did think that it would be bigger. I doubt they would make them to not fit though huh?

Yeah DM is right. The 15 was definitely too big to throw straight on an 04 model, with the standard case saver.
I don't know if the 2007 case save is different.
It may rub just a touch while riding. I had sparks throwing out of my old Honda at a speedway meet the first time i tried it.
No big deal though, 5 minute job with and angle grinder to take about 2mm off all the way around, and it's all good.
You will most likely find that the quad will not top out a 15T front and standard rear sprocket. It's too tall and cant push it. In other words it will push a faster top speed with a lower gearing (14T).
It nearly pushes a 15 all the way, but not quite in normal riding situations.
The 15T spreads the gears a lot too, so if you are in to technical riding, you might find that you do not always have a perfect gear for the job.
I did not like the big gear spacing for sand dunes, and often wanted a gear between 2nd and 3rd.
But as said, it does not cost too much to have a 13, 14 and 15T in the tool box and have a go

sorry my bad, i was more refering to a larger diameter not being to extreme so things are going to smash into other parts, when i put the 15 on i dont have to adjust anything, cover goes straight back on (should of explained it another way),

Cheers for that. I got a 15 and I'll probably try get a 14 too. Not that expensive anyway.

Iv got a 16/36 on 05. But iv also done a fair bit of motor work to it.
Case saver needs alot of grinding away, and chain wil need adjusting.
