Hi everyone i'm a newbie and its my first post. I need some advice on which Rene 800 to buy I rode a 2007 model the other day very impressed with it have also checked out a 2008 model for $10k with 100hrs its in a shabby condition but does have the better shocks (piggy back) different breaks, skid plates etc. The 2007 model has 53hrs looks to be a cleaner quad and has been to the cape 2 times and has had the belt changed once price is $9k. And then theres a new one for $15k with 3yr warranty. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Jim

Give Colin a ring at Extreme Motorcycles in Atherton. He has a couple of 2nd hand Renegades for sale at the moment. I know he has a 2010 Renegade 800 XXC that has done very little work. I am pretty sure it is not a great deal more than you are looking at for those older models.

Jime, welcome to the forum.
If I were in the market for a Renegade, I'd go with the new one. 3 year CONDITIONAL warranty and other improvements over the older models will make up some of the price difference, and a younger, one owner bike will be easier to sell in time to come. And having said that, there is some nice gades for sale on this forum too.

Hi Jime,
I prefer the combined braking circuit of the earlier Renegades. It's more like the Outlanders single lever operation which is easier and more effective. Especially if you plan to run around in 4x4 most of the time (where a split circuit achieves nothing).
The earlier models have lower power outputs too. It's more of a peak power thing though and they all have similar pull off the line. If you read the write ups of the day the Renegade 500's and 800's came out, most of them say that the 800's had too much power for most people to make the most out of them anyway.
I can't think of many other advantages of the earlier models and generally the later models all benefit from BRP's continuous technical improvements. Little things like coated CVT front drive sheeves, revised throttle blade, and all sorts of little adjustments. Most of which would be retrofit upgrade compatable, but obviously come standard on the later models.
Some don't... for example, the 2010 upward DPS power steering can not be just bolted on to the earlier models.

The engines do massive hours when looked after correctly and there are plenty of examples where some pretty rough farmers have brought in their Outlander for it's 2nd oil change service at 300 hours and the thing is still running with vegemite for oil.
As usual, get the most expensive one you can afford, in the best condition, with the best history... is standard good advice advice i supose.
But there will be plenty of old gems out there too. Units that are close enough to there new condition at maybe half current retail price. You won't loose too much on those ones in the future, and they should be great value.

Hi Jim,

look for a bike that is looked after, taken for regular services etc
ask them why they are selling it,, most common answer will be ''scared the crap out of me!!!! lol now thats a renegade 800 owner.

Hi Jime,

I bought this 2007 with low kms from a dealer, it was a demo model and the price was right, the only things I would like from the new model is the power steering and the QE visco front diff, apart from that it's a blast offroad. The cheaper inital cost gave me some spare money to add some accessories.

My brother who lives in the US has a 2007 800 Rene and I just picked up a gently used 2008 800X last spring from this forum. He beats the piss out of his, plows snow and runs from the cops and its never missed a beat, has about 2,000 miles on it. I love mine although don't get to ride much. Can't beat the sound of the V-twin, you'll love it I promise!

Way to go Jime, trying to decide and then thought 'bugger it' straight for the top hey, the 800X XC is the ultimate.

Wages are higher here, that explains the price difference, at my work we have a yank shat kicker, he told us it takes him 2weeks to make what he makes in a week here in Oz & of course the shipping charges would play some part in the increased price tag. Its also common knowledge that alot of retail product cost more here because of our location on this rock

Wages here are about twice as high for labor jobs compared to the states, but everything here is twice as expensive. For example in Pennsylvania where my parents live I can buy a 24 pack of decent tasting beer for $20 ($10-15 if you have no taste buds and just want to get pissed), here I haven't seen beer for less than $35. That said I do wonder who is pocketing all the $ when they sell a quad here for double the price when the exchange rate is 1:1.

The overheads associated with selling a quad in Australia are extremely high too. Because offering the same sales structure in the U.S. they would sell at least 10 times as many quads to pay for any effort made. Which is the reason that some don't even bother to sell in Australia at all. Our market is just too small, too expensive, and not worth the investment. And you could add that... even if you did bother to sell in Australia... they would all just whinge about the price anyway laughing

Congrats on the new quad Jime . Make sure you only have it serviced and maintained by people who have some idea of what they are doing. There will always be backyard cowboys who pass themselves off as "bike mechanics". Some of them cant even fit a belt without losing it after the first hour. lol. Hope you have a blast!!! Can-Ams are awesome Smile
